Thanks to bloggers and other alternative news source websites and social media, the stories about whether the myth of Oarfish causes large earthquakes has caused an earthquake effect of traffic on respective new streams and has captured the public’s imagination.
If one where to Google search information about the Japanese myth of Oarfish and earthquakes, only a small number of websites would be highlighted in blue (https://melbrake.wordpress.com was near or at the top) but after October 20-21, 2013, more stories become available about the myth from mainstream news media.
Here are example of stories refuting the myth about Oarfish:
The Independent (UK),
UT San Diego
The mainstream news media approach is to call the Japanese myth about Oarfish and earthquakes a rumor and to call on learned scientists to have the last word by saying no there is no connection. But if it was not for bloggers and social media the public would not even have been given the opportunity the make that connection.
